The mission started its activities in the Island in 1924 with the management of a few schools. The Ramakrishna mission (Ceylon Branch) was incorporated by Ordinance No.8 of 1929 Legislative Enactments. The main centre is in Colombo and is presently housed in its own spacious buildings in Ramakrishna Road, Wellawatte, Colombo, headed by Swami Sarvarubanandaji Maharaj. Universal TempleThe main temple is a hexagonal shaped construction where in the 'Sanctum Sanctorium' enshrines a portion of the sacred Holy Ashes of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. His picture along with those of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Srimat Swami Vivekananda are placed on the central altar. Rig Veda dictum "Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vathanthi" in Sanskrit with an English translation "Truth is one, Sages call it by various Names" are inscribed on the wall above the altar. To illustrate this further, the pictures of main spiritual stalwarts: Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Mahavir and Zoroaster are also installed on the walls of the shrine room and worshipped daily. The shrine radiates a peaceful atmosphere conducive to meditation. LibraryA separate two story building, houses the library and reading room on the ground floor, and a lecture and prayer hall on the top floor. This free library and reading room opens daily from 15.00 to 19.30 hours and has about 7800 books on religion and philosophy. There are also a few original rare collections of books and about 24 daily newspapers and periodicals available for references. Swami Vivekananda Memorial AuditoriumThe auditorium named Swami Vivekananda Centenary Memorial Hall has 1200 seats with a balcony. It is also rented out for the holding of lectures, seminars, religious and cultural functions for external public. International Cultural Centre (Guest House)The international cultural centre is functioning on a three story building with a beautiful beach panorama. In the ground floor, there are 2 halls which are made available on rent for the holding of religious, cultural programs and seminars and 30 rooms for use of Ramakrishna Mission Ceylon branch member, friends and devotees. Children’s PlaygroundThere is a playground for children and a beautiful garden and the entire complex is ideally situated and overlooks the Indian Ocean. The playground is opened daily for children and neighbours to come and play or relax in a pleasant atmosphere.
